“The exercises at the school consisted of prayer, reading the Scriptures and singing by the scholars, who showed great proficiency in their studies. Miss Mackay sung a beautiful solo, which called forth the applause of those present, and she was followed by Miss Sere, who acquitted herself in an equally creditable manner. Mr. Walter W. Adams, School Commissioner of the Eighth ward, being an old New York fireman, was called upon to address a few words of welcome to the company and their friends. He remarked that it was the first time a fire company had ever visited a public school in New York.”
