“A legitimate ‘Summer Season’ will this evening begin at Wallack’s Theatre, the first attraction of which will be a series of performances by a combination of artists, the principal among whom are Messrs. E. L. Davenport and J. W. Wallack and Miss Rose Eytinge.  The historical drama of ‘The Iron Mask’ is announced as the opening piece.”

Review: New-York Daily Tribune, 13 June 1865, 5.

“Summer theatrical seasons are usually the most doubtful and dangerous of experiments.  Their success is always problematical, their failure, in nine cases out of ten, is a forgone conclusion.  We therefore hail, with the satisfaction of a new sensation, the opening of a ‘Summer Season’ which promises at the very onset to fulfill every dramatic condition that the most exigent public can demand or the most expectant of managers could desire.  The first performance of the “Wallack and Davenport Combination” last evening at Wallack’s Theatre was a success of the rarest and most gratifying character.  The lateness of the hour at which it closed prevents us from giving it that full attention which it merits and which we hope to take an early opportunity of bestowing upon it.”
