Opens with in-depth discussion of Maretzek’s antics. “Max is a sort of operatic sensationer; he must always be in print, or in the Courts with suits against newspaper people or his own operatives. Although the ‘impressario’ [sic] is reported to have sunk immense sums in operatic speculations, yet he is always ready to dabble in anything that offers in that line, ever willing to suffer greater losses, and ‘sacrifice his all in order to uphold the Italian Opera in New York!’ Bah! Max is just like other speculators—if he sees a chance for making money, he goes in and makes it; if he didn’t find plenty of money in his operatic speculations he would cry quits, and give them up as a bad job. Although he may profess to care nothing for the press or its influence, yet without the aid of the press he would have been a ruined man in fact, long ago; he has always received ten times more from the press than the press has received from him.”
