“The Magnificent Ballet Troupe, Charley White, Wambold, Gallagher, &c., in their Negro Comicalities. Miss Agnes Sutherland and Miss Archer, the beautiful and accomplished vocalists.”
“What with a good corps of darkey representatives, a beautiful and finely formed ballet, a dramatic party, comic singers, gymnasts, and many other performers, the American, 444 Broadway, presents as entertaining a series of performances as any other establishment in this city. You can spend five minutes there in enjoyment, or you can spend nearly five hours, and never tire. The girls are pretty, and dance and sing correspondingly; the Nigs crack jokes until they almost make you crack your sides with laughter; while the audiences seem to enjoy themselves in ‘active repose,’ if you know what that means.”
