Greater freedom of American adolescent women relative to their European counterparts, in part resulting in the development of their sensuality and desire for romance and adventure. Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s susceptibility to young women’s admiration not fully to be blamed on him. His appearance, manner of carrying himself, fluency in four or five languages, and his intelligent, entertaining conversational style attractive to the feminine imagination; his weakness to these prospects has earned him the sobriquet “Don Juan Gottschalk.”
