“This gentleman was assisted by a number of singers and pianists, who sang and played some of the salon music of the present day very fairly. Mr. George Gru recited Russell’s ‘Ship on Fire’ in melodramatic manner; but we could not recognize a single feature of this superb creation of Russell in his version. The magnificent accompaniment was entirely ignored and the vocal part horribly mutilated. The rest of the programme was at least correctly rendered.”
