Announcement: New York Clipper, 22 April 1865, 14.

“In the Military Age, when soldiers meet the eye at every turn—soldiers with one leg, soldiers with no leg, armless soldiers, and some that are but living skeletons, the result of being imprisoned in the rebel pens and dens; in this age we say when the paraphernalia of war is seen everywhere, and when you can almost hear the thunder of cannon and the clash of arms—the military drama of ‘Corporal Cartouche,’ now being performed at Winter Garden, is a very appropriate representation. It is an interesting play in other than its military aspects, combining beautiful scenery, brilliant costumes, charming music and grand effects. Even Mayor Gunther might view this drama without fear of withstanding the slaughter of mutual friends. The ‘Corporal’ will soon abdicate in favor of some greater luminary.”
