“La Favorita drew an immense throng. . . . The cast was very much weakened by the substitution of Signor Ardavani for Signor Bellini. Ardavani did pretty well, but neither as an actor nor a singer can he satisfactorily supply the place of Bellini.
Mdlle. Poch acquitted herself to greater acceptation than heretofore. We recognized her claims as an artist at first, but she has vastly improved the impression made by her first performance, and merits our warm approbation for her performance on Saturday morning. A most amusing incident occurred after the Pope’s Nuncio had decreed a separation between the King and Leonora, for just as the act concluded with a grand ensemble, the curtain fell between Poch and Ardavani, and effectually carried into execution the Bull of the Pope. This very apropos contretemps excited shouts of laughter and applause, which continued until Mdlle. Poch appeared to bow her thanks for the solicitude of the public.”
