“Wm. Carleton, the Irish comedian from Dublin, and lately at Tony Pastor’s, has been obliged to go on a traveling tour in consequences of his health. He will join a panorama exhibition this week, returning to Tony Pastor’s in a short time, being under engagement to Tony for one year.”
“It is especially adapted to the present Fenian excitement, and went off with great applause. . . . . Josh Hart’s make-up for [illeg. name], an Escaped Felon, was capital, and his performances displayed considerable histrionic talent, a great deal more than we have given him credit for possessing. Tony Pastor as Jedediah Beetroot, a real Yank, was as happy as any ‘real down Easter,’ and his stump speech was great for Tony. Johnny Mack was huge as the English cockney. His make-up, acting and dialect were excellent. The minor characters were in good hands. Wm. Carleton, the Irish vocalist, continues to improve every night. Every time we see him the more are we convinced that he is one of the very best in his line seen in this country for a long time.”
