New Bowery Theatre

“The engagement, at the New Bowery, of the company from ‘444,’ proved a complete failure. It was natural to expect that a company which had been so popular on Broadway for so long a time, would prove to be just the style to please the east-siders, and that a big business would be the result of combining it with the dramatic forces at the theatre, but the result has proved the reverse. A very large was looked for on the opening night, but it was scarcely a paying one. The following night was the same, and so it continued up to the close of the engagement, which terminated on the 17th inst.  Experience has thus proved that the patrons of the New Bowery will not cotton to burnt cork burlesques, the ballet, or singing as the features. They look higher, and must have dramas of the sensation order.”
