Maretzek Italian Opera: L’Africaine

     “Meyerbeer’s ‘African’ will be given here to-night for the last time—this week.  The house will present the gorgeous and striking appearance which is elsewhere described in this paper—the decorations of the ‘Arion Ball’ remaining to-night and to-morrow at the matinée, which our readers will remember commences at 11 o’ clock—the doors opening at 10; opera ‘Crispino e la Comare.’”

     “A large audience at the Academy of Music last night received a fine performance of ‘L’Africaine’ with a coolness which the excellent merit of the performance did not justify. The artists all sang admirably, and were fairly entitled to the heartiest applause.”
