“A good average representation of the ‘Lady of Lyons’ was given here last evening.  The cast included several of the leading members of Mr. Stuart’s company, which, we may here add, is one of the best in the city.  It was rendered additionally interesting by the debut of Mr. Edward de Mondion as Claude Melnotte.  The gentleman has a pleasing voice and an easy stage presence.  He reads sensibly and without affectation, although it is clear that his style is modeled on that of a predecessor.  He gave a calm and unruffled impersonation of the gardener prince, and was warmly applauded by a large and appreciative audience.”

“[Mondion’s] voice is anything but pleasant, being entirely too effeminate for one who has played Macbeth and Hamlet. . . . Having a great many personal friends among the audience, he managed to be called before the curtain two or three times.”
