Includes a description of the non-musical portions of the ceremony. “A large number of visitors listened with evident pleasure to the various discourses, choruses, &c., all of which possessed a vast amount of merit.
The exercises were inaugurated by the overture to Auber’s Fra Diavolo, performed with fine effect by the band. . . . Donizetti’s chorus, ‘Mighty Jehovah,’ was rendered with sweetness by the students, under the direction of Prof. W. Hartmann. . . . A chorus, the ‘Echo,’ by the pupils, was received with applause.
A duet (violin and piano), performed by Professors Simon and Massey, whose names are well-known as virtuosos [sic] in the musical world, received a deserved encore.
. . .The ‘Laborers’ Chorus,’ from Gounod’s Faust, was then given with vigor by the students.”
