“The annual commencement of the Female Department of Grammar School No. 11, took place yesterday morning in the large room of the school, in Seventeenth-st., near Ninth-ave.
The room was very tastefully decorated, from the center hung a basket of running vines, in which half hidden by the leaves was a vase of gold fish. A new room is needed very much, as the present one is scarcely capable of seating half the scholars, and has low ceilings and poor means of ingress and egress.
The exercises were interesting. Three exhibitions of Calisthenics took the place of intermissions, and kept every one from being fatigued during the exercises, which occupied four hours.
The following was the order of exercises: Chorus – Haydn’s Moses in Egypt; Reading of Scripture; Chant – Lord’s Prayer; Composition – ‘What have ye done,’ by Josephine Stanley; Duet and Chorus – ‘I have waited for the Lord;’ Dialogue – ‘La violle consine;’ Chorus – Song of Dawn; Reading – ‘Singing for the Million,’ Jennie B. Merrill; this was excellent, and would put many an older scholar to shame; Reading – Scene from King Lear; Duet – Piano Solo – ‘’Tis but a little faded flower,’ Miss Emma Mikels; Chorus – Night’s Shade; Dialogue – ‘Die Gouvernante;’ Solo and Chorus – The May Queen, Helen Ten Eyck; Composition – ‘American Mind,’ Emma Mikels; Solo – Skylark, Carrie Jacacks; Recitation – ‘Thank God, the old flag’s flying,’ Josephine Esenprice; this was delivered with great feeling and received loud applause. The Valedictory, a creditable oration on ‘Woman’s Work,’ was delivered by Sarah E. Dalrymple.
S.R. Randall, County Superintendent, remarked that for the past seven months he had been visiting the public schools almost daily, and had witnessed many exercises like the present, but none had surpassed - he was not afraid to say equaled – these. The address to the school was given by the Rev. Dr. Clark; the address to the graduates by the Rev. Dr. Mikels. Mr. Riddle, City Superintendent, remarked that he had thoroughly examined the graduating class, and could testify that each had won her diploma as a graduate of the advanced course by hard study.
The diplomas were presented to Sarah E. Dalrymple, Robina Gilohrist, Margaret McNab, Josephine Stanley, Eveline Bergquist and Emma A. Mikels.
The parting song was given by the class, and after the doxology, the benediction was pronounced by the Rev. Dr. Mikels.”
