The Wednesday matinee ends in time for the afternoon trains. “The uproarious farce of the ‘Widow’s Victim’ was played previous to the ‘Balloon Wedding,’ and enabled Mr. Chanfrau to give his inimitable imitations of actors. To listen to them is as good as going to half a dozen theatres of an evening.”
No mention of music. “Chanfrau is a remarkably good actor. . . . The company, with the single exception of Mr. G. C. Davneport, is deplorably and intolerably bad. . . . As to ‘The Balloon Wedding’ there is nothing to be said, because the piece amounts to nothing. . . . ‘The Balloon Wedding’ will, probably, soon be a thing of the past. We certainly hope so. . . . [T]he Hanlons are the best gymnasts have ever appeared in the United States. Their exploits are wonderful. But the Circus, and not the dramatic stage, is the proper place for gymnasts.”
