“Last evening a large, but private and select, company assembled at the Astor House to enjoy the pleasure of a complimentary concert by the commander and officers of the North Carolina guard ship to General Banks. …

The band on his appearance struck up ‘Hail to the Chief’ . . .

… At the upper end was the band in full numbers and in full uniform, led by their accomplished companion and friend Mr. Malo. . . .

After the ‘Hail to the Chief,’ the band treated the company to some very beautiful pieces of music excellently performed.  For an hour or more the attention and interest of the company was almost entirely riveted by the music--

             'Dear music that can touch

Beyond all else the soul that loves it much.’

The band played ‘Home Sweet Home,’ and . . . the party began to disperse.”
