"It seems certain that we probably will not have a German Opera Company in New York for the next Fall and Winter season, at least not under the direction of Mr. Grover. It is deplorable that the German Opera will vanish for at least the next couple of years, after it had established itself in New York and thus had almost created a demand. There is still a good contingent of efficient German singers in this country and a good entrepreneur would easily be able—with the help of hiring singers from Europe—to build a German Opera Company, although, admittedly, good singers are rare even in Germany. Maretzek’s Italian Opera consists mostly of accomplished members of his earlier companies. Maretzek will open the Academy of Music by the end of September or the first days of October. Later on Grover will take over the company and tour to the smaller cities inland."
