Review: New York Clipper, 07 July 1866, 102.

“John Brougham and his burlesque of ‘Pocohantas’ are well appreciated by the habitués of Winter Garden, at which house, during the recent hot spell, the attendance was equal to, if not better than that of any other place of amusement.  The pretty little Emilie Melville—who has been expressly engaged for the part of Pocohantas—appeared to much better advantage the second week of her engagement, having become acquainted with our metropolitan audiences and their tastes.  During her first week she did not do herself justice; but the past week she made ample amends, and her songs were rapturously applauded. She plays the part in a quiet manner, in accordance, we have been given to understand, with the advice of the author, who prefers that style to the somewhat ‘loud’ and laughable policy of Mrs. John Wood.  We are pleased to record the success of our young friend; with care, study and practice, Miss Melville should at no distant day occupy a very prominent position on the dramatic boards.”
