“During the afternoon large crowds visited the Union Park, at the foot of Sixty-third street, East river, where the Beethoven Maennerchor, a prominent German musical association, the German printers (who for once during the year had a holiday) and other societies held forth. There was no dancing, and arrangements had been made by the proprietors of the park to keep away disreputable characters. The Beethoven Maennerchor sang several select pieces of men’s chorus songs, among others the songs of the German Rhein (‘Der Deutsche Rhein;’ ‘Das Gesellschafts lied [sic];’ ‘Die Drei [sic] Glaeser’ (the song of three glasses, quite a romantic composition); ‘Die Liebe,’ and other favorite compositions, which were executed with the usual precision. A boys’ organization in Zouave uniform about a hundred, composed of orphans of fallen Union soldiers, drilled on the ground, and made a fine appearance.”
