“Mr. Leonard Grover may comfort himself with the reflection that if he has not commanded success, he has at least deserved it. The business at the Academy has been fitful and spasmodic, but the performances have been good. ‘William Tell’ has drawn two good houses, but ‘Faust,’ ‘La Dame Blanche’ and ‘Fra Diavolo’ have been received with indifference, notwithstanding many points of great excellence in the performances. The matinée on Saturday was very poorly attended. There was indeed far too much music on that day, and no one came off victorious except the Philharmonic Society. The matinée at Wallack’s was not a whit better than the matinée at the Academy, and both audiences put together would hardly have filled either establishment. Let us hope that things will take a more active turn this week—which brings the German opera season to an end. The opera to-night is ‘Les Huguenots,’ which will be played for the only time. It should certainly draw a good house. To-morrow Mr. Grover gives his only performance in Brooklyn. ‘William Tell’ is the opera.”
