“The musical bit of ‘Jenny Leatherlung’s’ is given before the introduction of ‘Pocohontas’ [sic]—both are good and full of suggestive fun.”
“The successful revival of ‘Pocahontas’ bids fair to be a feature in the season of theatricals. It is carefully placed upon the stage, and the cast is thoroughly admirable. Mr. Brougham is the same old Powhatan as of yore. His war paint and Indianesqueries are singularly becoming; also, effective. He sings and dances and smokes and plays Injun with the abandon and humor which in other days made his Powhatan a gem of purest ray serene. Mr. Dunn as John Smith, the fortunate bridegroom of the original Pocahontas, is, of course, good. Walcot's Dutchman is stupid—intentional, of course, but none the less successfully stupid. Miss Melville assumes the rôle of Pocahontasto the delight of a numerous clientellee [sic] and invests it with a certain vivacious interest which it originally lacked. The choruses are excellent, the processions fine, the whole a success.”
“Pocahontas” is “the perfection of ridiculous, extravagant and enjoyable nonsense.”
“Our old friend, ‘Pocahontas,’ is revived at Winter Garden this week, ‘Columbus Reconstructed’ not proving quite as endurable or lasting as ‘Poco,’ which latter seems to please all classes of theatre-goers, and in which John Brougham shows to far better advantage, both as author and actor.”
