“Dan Bryant has created much ‘lafture’ by his Mazeppa burlesque, while his confreres in cork have kept their ends up with much vim since our last.”  Another item on the same page reads, “‘Mazeppa’ seems to have taken the town by storm. The Menken [Adah Isaacs Menken] is doing it at the Broadway in a style never before seen in this city. The San Francisco Minstrels are doing it in burlesque, and the Bryants also had a capital Mazeppa burlesque last week, with Dan Bryant as Mazeppa, introducing his highly-bred basket horse, with which he created considerable amusement.”
