". . . . A small improvised gathering Saturday evening, in the salons that M. Beer always opens to art so cordially, had procured for some privileged ones the occasion to hear two Italian singers [who are] newly arrived in New York, but for whom a reputation won't be long in coming. The first is a baritone like we've had extremely seldom: a steady, vibrant and flexible voice, serious at the same time that it's agile; singing that's grand and secure, exquisitely nuanced; expressive face; such is the rare ensemble of qualities that M. Dragone offers. He sang the final aria from Maria Padilla with taste and sentiment that surely wouldn't have disavowed Ronconi, for whom the piece was written. By his side, M. Buongiardino, a tenor with a lively and keen voice, was heard and revealed to be, in spite of conditions that were hardly favorable to judge him well, an artist of experience and merit. These two stars, still nebulous, will know how to find their way before long into the pleiades of singers belived by the public, and I count myself lucky to have been the first to notice them.
