“A large audience greeted Miss Helen Western upon the occasion of her first appearance at the Broadway theatre last evening. The plays selected for the debut of this actress, as well as that of Mr. J. A. Herne, were Satan in Paris and the musical burletta Jenny Lind, both of which pieces were very passably given for first performances, and will undoubtedly be improved upon during the present week. . . . [comments comparing her to her sister, Lucille Western and discussion of the “general stupor” of the supporting cast.]  Miss Western’s voice was impaired by a severe hoarseness, but she nevertheless made a fair hit in her songs and burlesque readings.”
