Review: New-Yorker Musik-Zeitung, 05 September 1866, 72.

Theodore Thomas’ concerts are always an artistic highlight. Even a waltz every now and then in the program is appropriate. Someone who can not see the verve, beauty and poetry in a waltz will also not recognize it in Beethoven’s symphony. The only suggestion for improvement of the program we would like to make is to cancel the solo pieces. The acoustics in an outdoor setting are challenging enough for the orchestra.
