“An African Ballet Troupe is to be introduced to the patrons of the San Francisco Minstrels this week, a burlesque of the ‘Black Crook’ being the vehicle in which these sooty creatures will be brought out.”

“The ‘Black Crook’ in Black.—The hall, 585 Broadway, testified all last week to the wonderful popularity of the San Francisco Minstrels, for every part of the house was crowded to excess, and the performances were received with enthusiastic applause. A programme was submitted which, for genuine merit, has seldom been equaled. The performance each evening concluded with a burlesque on the ‘Black Crook,’ in which nearly all the principal members of the company appeared. It was a very lively and extravagantly laughable affair. Birch appeared as Bonfanti, Bernard as Regal, Backus as Sangelli, and Wambold as the Black Crook. The dancing of the first three as young damsels with Tarleton skirts and wings was immense. The burlesque terminated with the ‘Palace of Dew Drops,’ in which a large number of rare plants, consisting of cabbages, turnips and other vegetables, were displayed.”
