“The first annual ball of this excellent society took place last night at the New York Assembly Rooms. About three hundred persons were present, but the receipts were not as large as was hoped and anticipated. The room presented a very fine appearance, the ladies were richly dressed, the characters excellently represented and the music Theodore Thomas’ best. As a fancy ball it must be pronounced a decided success. Indians, clowns, sailors, stage Irishmen, men with hats as tall as themselves, men with no hats, dukes, militia men, kings, darkies, ballad singers and the usual number of brigands and heavy ruffians from the Campagna were represented. [Briefly discusses some prominent members of the society.] At twelve o’clock an elegant supper was served. [More brief discussion about society members.] After supper, which was excellently served, dancing was resumed and maintained until a late hour.”
