“On Thursday evening, the Black Hunters [die schwarzen Jäger], 54th Regiment, N.Y. Volunteers, who recently returned from the field, gave one of the most pleasant and best-attended balls of the season. In spite of the rainy weather, members of other regiments, both volunteer and militia, were there aplenty. Even a number of officers were present, though many of the 54th Regiment’s officers remained on the battlefield or were taken as prisoners of war. Even so, the beloved officer, Capt. Wertheim, was present at the ball, which continued with undisturbed gaiety until the next morning.”
