“The season of the Italian Opera at the Wintergarten has come to an end, and Maretzek’s business did not do too well. Artistically speaking, the last season was satisfactory; there certainly were worse seasons before. The performances of Nordstern, Zampa and the Barbier were excellent. The Ballo in Maschera was also a well done and very interesting performance, because there were three debuts: Miss McCullough as ‘Amelia’, Miss Hauck as ‘Page’ and Miss Stella Bonheur as ‘Ulrica’. The latter exceeded the other two in her skill. She displayed an extraordinary dramatic talent. Hauck’s singing is acceptable; however, she is not yet familiar with the stage and showed an almost childish inexperience. McCullough seems to have a talent to always select roles that are significantly too difficult for her. She experienced a minor fiasco. Mazzoleni screamed and exaggerated in a highly refreshing fashion.”
