“Thursday, La Fille du Régiment got the warmest welcome. Could it be otherwise with interpreters like Mlle Naddie and M. Anthelme? The former had to repeat, as always, the Salut à la France, and the latter sang the romance in the second act with great skill. We spoke yesterday of a singer with geometric skill [Kellogg]: in the matter of soul and pathos, Mlle Naddie has enough and to spare, and it suffices to be persuaded of this to hear her sing, in the first act of La Fille du Régiment, the beautiful aria Il faut partir, and give a heart-rending expression to the cry, Ah! Par pitié, cachez-moi bien vos larmes. It’s impossible to extend sentiment and emotion further. M. Vert is very good as Sulpice, M. Chol is an amusing Hortensius, and Mme Daire contributes to the excellent ensemble. The audience called the singers back after each act.”
