“The News Boys’ Concert came off last evening, at the Middle Dutch Church, in Lafayette Place, corner of 4th street. About 100 boys occupied one of the galleries in the church, and sang some of the many songs which are taught them at the ‘Lodge,’ such as ‘My Own Dear Native Land,’ ‘Star Spangled Banner,’ &c. A better behaved set of boys are not often found, even when surrounded by far more favorable circumstances. The audience was not very large, and judging by the number present, the receipts will not reach a very high figure. The singing was very creditable to the ‘Accidentals,’ but the whole affair might have been improved with one of two short addresses interspersed. The song ‘Save the Boy, he’s Worth the Saving,’—an admirable composition, written by J. C. Desmond, formerly connected with the News Boys Lodging House—was sung with stirring effect. The affair was on the whole enjoyable.”
