“The Presbyterian Church of the Sea and Land, corner of Market and Henry streets, was comfortably filled, last evening, with the friends of the institution, who gathered to listen to a sacred concert, which was given for the benefit of the Church. The programme was extensive, in fact almost too prolonged, to allow the audience to keep good hours, and we venture to say that very many ‘candle lectures’ were administered to married gentlemen in the audience, on their return home, who forgot to bring their good wives with them. The exercises of the occasion were opened with a prelude upon the organ by Mr. J. A. Holden, who played with very good taste and fine effect. Then followed a very choice and appropriate selection of solos, duets and quartettes, vocal and instrumental [list of participants]. To particularize in the praise of the efforts of the performances would be unfair in the extreme. All did their utmost to please the audience, and not a piece was rendered without a hearty encore. The entertainment was finally closed with the Doxology, ‘Praise God from whom all blessings flow,’ &c., after which the delighted assemblage dispersed.”
