“The much-abused Academy of Music is to be ready for use (so announced) about the 20th of February.  Why that unfortunate building should be the subject of so much personal spite, it is difficult to imagine.  All custodians of the public peace and happiness, from judges on the bench down to newspaper critics, have hurled their ponderous opinions against those devoted walls; but they still stand firm, and are destined long to stand, we trust, for the benefit of art in our community, even though the grumblers continue to grumble, and grand juries are fairly saturated with anti-Academy charges.  The tiers, staircases, and scenery are all in the house, and Mr. Kingsland is determined to put a sufficient number of men to work to complete the house at the promised time.  Of the success of the coming season there cannot be the slightest doubt, even if this success should be partly owing to the new building.  The house offers a much more tasteful outer aspect than formerly, it having received a coat of red color similar to that of the Academy of Music in Philadelphia.”
