“150th Séance”

Review: New York Herald, 05 February 1867, 7.

“A large and highly respectable audience crowded Dodworth Hall last evening to witness the performances of Mr. Hartz, especially that of the ‘Proteus,’ of which so much has been said and read within the last week.  Mr. Hartz also amuses himself and patrons by rolling a silk handkerchief between his hands until it is diminished to a size that renders it completely ‘invisible.’  It then again appears, transmogrified into blotting paper, finally resumes its old ‘status,’ and is safely returned to the possession of its rather nervous owner, who hesitates to apply it to its former uses after so many mysterious changes.  These are only a few of a programme of splendid deceptions nightly performed by the gentleman in a manner that places him in the position of one of the best prestidigatateurs that has appeared before the public for many years.”
