“There was an entirely new programme at this favorite east side resort last evening, and the cozy auditorium was crowded to repletion with an enthusiastic and appreciative audience.  The attractive feature of the evening’s entertainment was a new drama entitled ‘The Female Brigand Chief.’  The play is replete with thrilling scenes, and was well performed throughout—Mis[s] Jennie Engel as Octavia, the female bandit, being especially worthy of mention—and altogether proved quite a success.  What with the manifold attractions that are offered nightly at this place of amusement in the way of ballets, comic songs, gymnasts and ‘musical households,’ there will be found for some time to come a real fund of enjoyment for Tony Pastor’s patronizers at his Opera House.”
