“Mrs. Gazzaniga and several other currently unemployed artists have decided to stage operas at the French theater. We are doubtful this endeavor will be successful, though the ambition displayed is praiseworthy. . . .The current season has been a bad one. Not the best time to start something new. Two reasons for the weak season are the general halt of business and the lack of money, and also the circumstance that the Academy of Music is still not rebuilt. This venue was the fashionable meeting place for people who wanted to be seen and who were able to spend money for such amusement. There is not enough room in the theaters to rendezvous and display elaborate wardrobe, thus the aristocracy is not attending. Consequently the above endeavor’s prognosis is not very good.”
