“The festival of the Trinity choirs last night was the first full choral rehearsal of the choirs of Trinity Parish, preparatory to their performance of the ‘Messiah.’ With an orchestra and chorus of three hundred on the 25th instant, at St. John’s Chapel, Varick street, Trinity Parish. The Trinity choirs were assisted by a large number of ladies and gentlemen from other church choirs in New York and the neighboring cities. There could not have been less than two hundred vocalists. Many of the choruses were given with point and precision, and the rehearsal, for a first trial, was extremely creditable. A better acquaintance with the conductor’s baton will no doubt improve the whole. Dr. W. H. Walter and Mr. Messiter performed the piano accompaniments. The conductor was Dr. James Pech. A full choral service is to be given at Trinity Church on the same morning of the festival by the united choirs of the parish, on which occasion the rector, the Rev. Dr. Dix, will preach the sermon. Any profits arising from the festival are to be devoted to the sick and poor of the parish.”

“The approaching festival of the Trinity choirs, similar to those given in the English cathedrals, will be something new in this country.  A rehearsal took place on Tuesday, and gave promise of success in the novel musical enterprise.  The proceeds will be devoted to the sick and poor of the parish.”
