"The leading attraction at Mechanic’s Hall, the Fenian’s Oath, a drama abounding in ludicrous situations, improbable occurrences, and laying claim to some little originality, still holds the boards and draws audiences fully as large as those that greeted it on the first evening of the production. The incidents of life in Ireland have not been omitted in the piece, and the sports at the fair are characteristic of the land in which the scene is laid, and are among the funniest of the kind ever placed upon the New York stage. A genuine greased pig is introduced, and a fairy ballet in a grotto on the Lakes of Killarney, in which the Goddess of Irish Liberty takes part, is given with beautiful effect, while the play ends in the death of an informer, the utter annihilation of half a regiment of red coats, and a magnificent transformation scene, with the Goddess of Irish Liberty in the background, and the indispensable red fire and a number of green flags occupying a prominent feature near the wings."
