On May 14th, the most popular composer of German songs, Franz Abt, celebrates his silver anniversary. That day he wrote the song “Wenn die Schwalben heimwärts ziehen” [“When the swallows fly home”], which went around the world. He wrote this song in Zurich, where he then also began to write 4-voiced men’s chorus songs: “Der Abend sinkt” [“The evening decends”], “Stimm Deine schönsten Melodien” [“Tune your most beautiful melodies”], “Sabbathfeier” [“Sabbath Celebration”], etc., which are all still very popular with choruses. Hardly any men’s choral concert is given without at least one of Abt’s songs being performed. (The rest of the article has the same content as: NNYMZ 04/20/67, p. 386)
