“Grafulla’s Seventh regiment band rehearsed the programme for their last concert this season yesterday afternoon at the armory. The principal attraction was the new brass instruments, made for the band by Schreiber, and used for the first time on this occasion. The form, action and [?] valve of these instruments are great improvements over the old style, and will eventually revolutionize brass instruments. The tone is also more correct, more powerful and instantaneous; and in fifths, the most difficult chord to produce correctly on two horns, there was not a shade of inaccuracy of intonation. The form also, giving a uniform upward direction for all the [bells?], and thereby producing an entire unity of sound, like an immense organ, is both striking in appearance and effect. These instruments are entirely constructed by means of machinery, and will undoubtedly replace the old style.”

For the first time the corps played on the new brass instrument manufactured by Schreiber Cornet Manufacturing. Sharp bends and angles were avoided in the design of the instrument; it rests on the shoulder of the musician, the sound will go upward. The water can now be drained without the musician needing to move away from the mouthpiece.
