Alternate Title(s): Volk’s Garden;
Deutsche Volksgarten
Comment: FEB 1863.
AR: NYC 08/29/63, p.155 – “The Volks Garden, in the Bowery, is closed, and it is said that, in consequence of some underhanded play on the part of a German manager, who succeeded in getting a lease of the Stadt Theatre on the sly, to the ‘detriment’ and disgust of his late partner, Harmann, who has been thrown out by the arrangement—‘Volks’ is to be fitted up in Dutch, as a regular theatre, to oppose Heym, of the Stadt. We don’t understand it, exactly; we were under the impression that Harmann owned both places—the Stadt and Volks—but it would appear he has only a grip on the ‘Volks.’ We don’t know how it will eventuate; it’s a very pretty Dutch quarrel as it stands, and is the very thing for hot weather. ‘Swi glas bier.’”
