Attributed to John Davy; Grove says, however: "Today he [Davy] is remembered, if at all, for a fine sea-song, ‘The Bay of Biscay’, introduced in his opera Spanish Dollars. In fact the tune was that of a shanty sung to him by the tenor Charles Incledon, who had picked it up when he was a sailor in the 1780s."
