Possibly due to the parallel event of the Liederkranz ball, many seats remained empty last night at the German theater. The first piece was poorly received. A rather flat script with several rather ambiguous jokes, and a lead actor who does not speak the required Saxon dialect well did not bode well with the audience. Der Zigeuner, however, was enthusiastically applauded. Rethwisch was perfect in the part of the Hungarian son, down to the smallest detail. His fellow actors inappropriately used an Austrian dialect for their roles.
