“For those who delight in open air entertainments, the Summer Concerts which have been inaugurated at Terrace Gardens offer delightful inducements. Terrace Garden, it should be known, primarily, is a brief corner of paradise, which has been leased to earth, and is angled by 3rd avenue and 59th streets. The tired mortal goes there for rest under its peaceful shades; the sentimental devotees of Venue and Apollo wander through its emerald paths and listen to the melodious strains and sitting music from Theodore Thomas’ grand orchestra; and the hungry and the thirsty may sit and enjoy the sight and sounds of all these, and partake of the viands and fluids that suit them best.  Terrace Garden, in short, is a little bit of national Germany, and national France, lifted out of their native capitals and transplanted in New York, for the summer folks to enjoy. It is in the presence of just such primitive recreations as these open air concerts and this open air enjoyment where the young flock to enjoy themselves with the young—that one recalls their earliest pleasures, and their earliest dreams. With different persons these are always different. Dreams are as individual as the individuals who dream them, and pleasures are not the same to three generations in succession. There is a generation rising which will remember, for instance.”
