“Orpheus in der Unterwelt, a German version of Offenbach’s well known opera, Orphée, was given at the Stadt theatre last night, before a large audience.  Mme L’Arronge, the Eurydice, is an excellent actress, and possesses a fresh, well trained and sympathetic voice.  Her husband, the Jupiter on the occasion, is a German edition of Burton. The opera was placed on the stage in splendid style, both as regards costumes and scenery, and the chorus and orchestra did their duty with fidelity. The German language, however, is hardly suited for the light, sparkling music of Offenbach.”

Despite the significant costs of the Orpheus performances, they were not very successful. The only praise we can give to Mrs. L’Arronge as “Euridice”.
