“Anschutz’s German opera company celebrate their hundredth performance with a representation of the greatest opera they have produced – Beethoven’s ‘Fidelio.’ The success of the German opera now seems to be established; and the credit is almost entirely due to Carl Anschutz, whose energy and musical skill have combined to keep together a company of fair artists who, though possessing in no individual case superlative merit, have sung in a greater number of operas than any proceeding opera troupe. Mr. Anschutz’s operas have been like a series of neatly finished cabinet paintings. Every detail has been attended to with careful conscientiousness, and the result has been most satisfactory to the public.” COMMENT: This was only the 80th performance in NYC.
