“The name of Herr Anschutz is a ‘household word’ to the readers of the Times. More than any other man during the past ten years he has been before the public as a reliable champion of music. It will be seen by the advertisement elsewhere that this fine musician has recently inaugurated a Musical Institute for the instruction of beginners and advanced pupils in every branch of the musical art. We have recently visited the establishment, which is conveniently located at No. 141 East Eighth-street, and can speak with confidence of the excellent order and discipline which prevails there. It must be remembered that every element and combination of music is taught, from the simple gamut to the full orchestral score. In each department we found thoroughly competent teachers – gentlemen, indeed, of acknowledged eminence in their profession. Mr. Anschutz’s direction of the Institute would of itself insure this result. We give a list of the professors: Singing – Mme. Bertha Johannsen, Herr Carl Anschutz, Marco Duschnitz. Piano – Messrs. A. Davis, A. Buechel, H. Kalliwoda, Wm. Groscuath, Max Braun, (organist and composer,) A. Neuendorf, (conductor of the German Opera.) Organ – Max Braun, A. Davis. Theory of Music – Herr Carl Anshutz, Mr. A. Buechel, Mr. Max Braun. Violin – Mr. Joseph Noll. The terms of admission are moderate, placing the usefulness of the Institute within the reach of all. We trust sincerely that Mr. Anschutz may succeed in his enterprise. At best, the advantage will be on the side of the public. A visit of examination to the Institute will show intending students that everything has been prepared for their comfort and convenience, and what we have said will, we hope, convince them that they can get a musical education in New-York quite as well as in any city of Europe, if they are desirous of doing so.”
