“A new German musical society called the Frauenlob, on Sunday night celebrated its first anniversary at Dramatic Hall, by a banquet, followed by a ball at the hour of twelve o’clock. The name of Frauenlob is derived from the originator of German chorus and battle songs, Henry von Meissen, who had the bye name of ‘Frauenlob,’ and when he died, in 1816, his body was carried to the grave by women. The new society numbers some forty-five members, the majority of whom are active singers. Previous to the banquet and subsequently a series of choruses were sung and Mr. Henry Mollenhauer gave a solo on the violin. During the banquet several comic songs, which had been prepared especially for the occasion, were chanted, and two of the gentlemen appeared on the stage in costume, and engaged in a ludicrous performance. The attendance was of a respectable class, and a number of the members of the Arion were present to participate in the festivities.”
