“A new play, entitled ‘The Heart of the Great City,” was produced last evening on the boards of the Old Bowery theatre. This piece, which proceeds from the pen of Mr. Thaddeus B. Glover, has all the concomitants of the modern drama; but, although rich in scenic effects and their chief incidents, appears to be mostly deficient in plot. There is a prologue certainly which does not seem to have any reference to the after-play, a skating scene which is supposed to occur in the Park, but which is strongly suggestive of ‘Le Prophète,’ and the customary amount of by-play usual in such Thespian attempts; but in real dramatic plot ‘The Heart of the Great City’ seems sadly wanting. If Mr. Glover would submit himself to a rigorous course of French plays, there is little doubt that he will improve in play writing and be a dramatist in time. The actors, however, acquit themselves well under the trying rôles they are subjected to. Mrs. W. G. Jones acts, as she always does, in the manner of a consummate artiste, and Mr. Martin exhibits his usual caustic vein. Mr. Johnson has made a hit as the old beggar, although a little too Forrestish, and the remaining characters are cleverly sustained.”
