“It was a willful and jealous wind that gave Mlle. Reillez a cold on the night of her benefit, and so prevented that active little throat from warbling the dozen ditties that belong to the part of Colombe in ‘La Damoiselle de Nanterre.’. . . The piece descends almost to buffoonery, and never stops for a moment at a point of vulgarity. . . . For the mere squeamishness there is nothing in the world like a French vaudeville. . . . People who are constantly shocked at the merest trifles have been known to swallow an entire vaudeville, hot, strong and sweet, without winking. . . . Both pieces were received with favor, and will perhaps be repeated . . . These French amusements are worthy of the support of the public. They are conducted with spirit, and bid fair to become a permanent element of our Winter season of amusement.”
